(1960-2006)

On Wednesday, May 17, 2006, Ultralight Flying! magazine Editor-in-chief Scott Wilcox, 45, passed away after battling a variety of health issues. While those are the facts of Scott's death, it's more comforting to remember the person he was.

Scott was fun to be with, his wit, sense of humor and gift of mimicry winning him many laughs and friends. He enjoyed playing golf, gloating when he outplayed his friends and moaning when he didn't. The fishing and camping trips he and his buds went on became legendary in the retelling; their annual trips to the Indy 500 were some of Scott's bachelor days highlights. Because he loved music, plinking on his guitar and keeping tabs on favorite bands and music festivals were ongoing passions.

Scott also loved animals and was great with children, which was good, because he became a stepfather in 1993 when he got married, turning his bachelor world upside down. And every December he became "Mr. Christmas," lavishing gifts on his family, sending out Christmas cards and playing classic Christmas selections at work such as Mel Torme and Andy Williams until some his coworkers threatened to burn the tapes.

Probably Scott's greatest satisfaction in life came from his position at Ultralight Flying! magazine, where he worked for more than 22 years. His recall of facts about ultralights, people and events was phenomenal, and the friendships he developed over the years were deep.

Scott is missed. His life will be remembered fondly, with laughter and tears. Ultralight Flying! magazine will go on, as it has for 31 years with continuing coverage of ultralights and the emerging world of light sport aircraft. Scott would have wanted that. Publisher and magazine founder, Tracy Knauss, who recognized Scott's many contributions over the years, has promoted Sharon Wilcox to the top editorial position of Editor-in-Chief.

A memorial service was held Wednesday morning, May 24 at 10 a.m. at Harrison Bay State Park by Tennessee's Chickamauga Lake, where Scott spent so many hours fishing, swimming and boating.
