FAA is releasing two new repairman certificates applying to the new Light-Sport Aircraft category.
Experimental Light-Sport Aircraft operators of new kits and transitioning planes will be able to perform their own maintenance, per the manufacturer's instructions. To perform the required annual inspection, operators must complete a 16-hour course earning a repairman certificate with an inspection rating.
Ready-to-fly Special Light-Sport Aircraft operators not using their plane for commercial purposes may perform specified preventative maintenance per the manufacturer's instructions. To perform the required inspections of Special Light-Sport Aircraft, operators must hold a repairman certificate with a maintenance rating. This requires an 80-hour course (glider or lighter-than-air); 104-hour course (weight-shift or powered parachute); 120-hour course (airplanes).
Existing airframe and powerplant mechanics may perform maintenance
and inspection of both Experimental and Special Light-Sport Aircraft.
