September 11-12: 6th Annual Wings Over the Big South Fork and Concert, Scott Municipal Airport (SCX), Oneida, Tennessee, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday, September 11, Wings Over the Big South Fork will host a free concert featuring the music of rising bluegrass star Sierra Hull (www.SierraHull.com). Gates will open for food and beverage sales at 5 p.m. with the concert at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, September 12, the Sixth Annual Wings Over the Big South Fork Air Show will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wings ’09 features the solo and formation aerobatic talents of Michael Mancuso and C.C. Gerner in their Extra 300s, Michael Kennedy in his BT-13, and Bryan Jensen in a highly modified Pitts Model 12 Biplane. WWII warbirds, Experimental aircraft, possibly the Liberty Foundation’s fully restored B-17 bomber offering rides to the public, parachute demonstrations, fly-bys of exotic aircraft, a Family Fun Center along with aviation and Big South Fork displays and exhibits. Fireworks and Wings’ popular “Wall of Flame” pyrotechnics demonstration will round out the activities. As part of Big South Fork’s own Economic Stimulus Package, admission to Friday’s concert and Saturday’s air show is free to those arriving by air, and to the first 10,000 spectators holding advance free tickets. Free tickets can be picked up at any of the show’s sponsor locations and businesses throughout East Tennessee beginning the last week of August. September 26-27: Coronado Speed Festival, part of Fleet Week San Diego – the only Navy open house on the West Coast – will feature auto racing and exhibitions for car enthusiasts of all ages at the Naval Air Station, North Island. October 1-3: Midwest LSA Expo, Mt. Vernon Outland Airport (MVN), Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Organized to educate aviators about all facets related to the Light-Sport Aircraft industry, this Expo will make use of the airport’s amenities, including its 6,500- by 150-foot main runway, five precision approaches, acres of concrete ramp space, Class “E” airspace, and ARFF Index A safety. October 10: Southeast Trikers 2009 Gathering, Buster and Diane's Airpark
(GPS coordinates: N34 34' 47.63, W85 40' 55.55). Located between Valley Head and Ft. Payne, Alabama, this year's site features a lake with a pavilion, camp sites, and a 2,300-foot private grass runway. A Boston butt roast, bonfire, demonstrations, safety seminar and flying tours are scheduled Saturday. Arrivals are expected on Friday, the 9th and departures on Sunday, the 11th.
